Introduction
This 5-day STEM camp provides elementary students with a hands-on and engaging introduction to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Each day focuses on one specific STEM area through fun, interactive experiments and activities. The camp concludes with a final project that combines all four STEM fields, encouraging teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving.
**Day 1 : Instructors and Volunteers Orientation (no students)
Introductions and instruction from the lead instructor, Mr. Nabaray Mohammed. Preparations of experiment supplies and stations for the students will be organized. Instruction booklets will be given out and any questions answered. Team leads assigned and safety procedures reviewed.
Day 2: Science - "Exploring Acid and Base Reactions" (students arrive)
Time: 4 hours
On day two, students will dive into chemistry. This experiment helps them learn about acid-base reactions, chemical properties, and the pH scale. Students will observe how the two substances react and bubble, providing a visual understanding of chemical reactions.
Day 3 : Technology - "Building a Hydraulic Lift"
Time: 4 hours
Students will explore technology and engineering by building a simple hydraulic lift. They will learn how hydraulic systems use fluid to transfer force, allowing them to lift objects with minimal effort. This experiment introduces them to the basics of fluid dynamics and hydraulic technology.
Day 4: Engineering - "Building a Bridge with Straws"
Time: 4 hours
On day four, students will apply engineering concepts by designing and building a bridge. They will test how much weight their bridge can hold, learning about structural integrity, balance, and design principles like tension and compression. This activity fosters creativity and critical thinking while learning about real-world engineering problems.
Day 5: Math - "Fun with Numbers: Math Scavenger Hunt"
Time: 4 hours
The final day will focus on math, specifically numbers, as students participate in a fun math scavenger hunt. The camp will create a series of math challenges that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and simple division. Students will solve these puzzles to unlock clues that will lead them to hidden objects or the next part of the scavenger hunt. This interactive game reinforces math skills in a fun and engaging way.
Final Project: "STEM World Showcase"
Time: 4 hours (split throughout the day)
For their final project, students will work in teams to create a prototype that incorporates science, technology, engineering, and math. Students will present their projects to the group, explaining how each STEM field was applied.
